Facing the Challenge of Racism and Race Relations
SCED has offered several community-wide forums for individuals throughout the county to discuss this sensitive topic.
The five-part series features
- Sharing personal experiences of race relations
- Discussing the nature of racism
- Brainstorming on creative ideas for making progress in race relations
- Exploring public policies that affect race relations
- Moving from words to action in our community
Following these study circles, participants have committed to taking actions to benefit the community. These have included:
- Introducing study circles on race relations to high schools and middle schools
- Sending volunteers into schools to share personal experiences and read stories about a variety of cultures
- Helping with events that bring together different segments of the community
- Hosting a forum at Union College to respond to the Sept. 11, 2001 acts of terrorism and promote an understanding of Islam
